L.S Lowry

Laurence Steven Lowry was born in 1887, he was born in Manchester. He the only child, and began to draw at the age of eight. At the age of fifteen he began private painting lessons this commenced through his last year of school. It wasn’t till 1904 when he joined a firm of chartered accountants as a rent-collector and clerk, he remained at this job till he retired at the age of 65.
It wasn’t until 1916, when his highly individual style began around Manchester. He was inspired by the sight of workers leaving a local mill, he was then to explore in his work in industrial areas around him. He later declared that , “all my materials our on my doorstep.” he originally focussed on the industrial architecture, but people in his paintings became central in later years. His Father died in 1932 for the next seven years, his 73 year old mother became bed fast and completely ruled his life. After her death in 1939 Lowry painted the bedroom Pendlebury– in memory of those long hours he spent looking after her.
The characteristics of his paintings , A very pale background bring out the colours of the main buildings. Lowry only used five colours, flake white, ivory black, ochre, prussian blue, vermillion, these were applied directly to the page.
He regularly took his work to the Royal Academy in Manchester, as they held a exhibition there for his work. Some of his paintings were: Waiting for shops to open, painted in 1926.

His most inspired painting was: Coming from the mill, painted in 1930.

He also painted Piccadilly gardens painted in 1954.

Sadly Lowry died in 1976 at the age of 88. A memorial exhibit was opened at the Royal Academy and it is still there today.
It was after his death that Laurence Steven Lowry was considered as a famous artist.
